When California-based Specialized Bicycle Components asked us to create a distinct look and feel for their premium EV offering, the goal was nothing short of redefining the electric bike category.

The culmination of a creative partnership that began in 2025, we were entrusted with the brief to create a unique visual language for their electric category.  A radical departure from their traditional brand communication, the challenge was to shift the visual language from performance bikes to luxury vehicles while maintaining the brand’s ‘rider-first’ philosophy, high-performance heritage and innovation focus.

The creative opportunity

Digging deep into our experience of crafting powerful visual narratives for performance and luxury brands, we worked closely with Specialized to develop and articulate the visual strategy and language that supported the category repositioning and underpinned multi-channel brand communication going forward.

"The challenge was to move beyond the utility of a bike and focus on the sensory experience an EV evokes," says Thomas Valente, founder and ECD of Inertia.

Creatively, our aim was to break with the static photo-real conventions associated with traditional performance bikes in favour of a more elevated look. Our approach was to leverage CG to give us full control and flexibility over the visual identity.

The core elements of our creative strategy were threefold: to elevate Vado's engineering innovation and ‘Supernatural Power’, to differentiate the Vado family with a unique, cohesive visual approach, and to leverage the flexibility of Digital Twin assets.

"We treated the Vado not as a bicycle, but as a premium vehicle,” adds Valente. “By adopting an automotive lens, we leant into the experience of 'supernatural power’, conveying the feeling that the power and features don't just assist you, they elevate your interaction with the world."

Making the Invisible Visible

A core pillar of the brief was to communicate the engineering innovation that gives the Vado’s rider ‘supernatural power’. Our X-Ray concept, developed as part of our R&D,  provided an elegant solution.

By creating a high-fidelity Digital Twin, we were able to maximise detailed engineering files within the creative. Animated product reveals allow consumers to appreciate the engineering marvel of the battery and motor hidden within the frame. This Apple-inspired approach celebrates the internal beauty of the product, making abstract technical specs visually tangible, spotlighting this power as hyper-desirable.

Feeling over place

Drawing on luxury automotive and fashion references, we explored environments that evoked a feeling of luxury more than a sense of place. The challenge was allowing the small, light-weight silhouette of the bike to stand out. We ultimately opted for a highly stylised, minimal approach that provided a quiet yet aspirational backdrop to the Vado.

In our workflow, material, lighting and colour were key to achieving environments that felt like a cohesive set and we employed an abstract, caustic lighting with deep shadows to elevate them with a distinct aesthetic. To give life and soul to the bikes, R&D led to a custom shader that captured the iridescent paintwork of each Vado colourway.ay.

"Through CGI, we’ve been able to redefine the visual brand language of a growing category, achieving what would be prohibitively expensive or physically impossible in real life,’ notes Valente. “By helping Specialized embrace the versatility of CG assets and leveraging digital twins, we are ensuring the longevity of assets and preparing them for the next generation of spatial interaction.”

The partnership is a testament to Inertia’s boutique agility and craft-led growth. With a vision for how CGI could revolutionise the visual language of the performance cycling category, the boutique studio secured Specialized as a client in 2025, evolving and elevating their visual language across internal roadmaps and specific features to leading major global product launches
